  • Olympic Games 2012:
12 August 2012 PSB performed at the Closing ceremony of the Olympics Games 2012. As Daily Mail reported earlyer they played "West End Girls" edited version. Costume and hats designed Gareth Pugh.

    from Vanity Fair interview:
Now that it’s behind you, what was it like to be part of the Olympics closing ceremony?
Neil Tennant:Very exciting. They asked us to do it about four months ago and showed us the plan. They wanted to have this section about London, a traffic jam that turns into a street party—and they had a little model of us wearing the pointy hats.

I was going to ask about the pointy hats.
They’re from a video for a song called “Can You Forgive Her.” The designer of the closing ceremony thought this was the right image so we went with it. It’s quite interesting. We did something with pointy hats years and years ago, almost 20 years ago, and people still remember that image of us.

You performed your first hit, “West End Girls.” Do you still consider that to be your signature song?
There was no discussion of the song choice. They wanted it because it’s a song inspired by London. It was already worked out going into One Direction and then “Waterloo Sunset” with Ray Davies. It seemed an appropriate song to do. There aren’t that many famous songs about London. It’s not like New York. Obviously we’d rather have done the new single [laughs] like some artists did.

You’re talking about George Michael? He also did “Freedom ’90.”
Would you had rather he done “Careless Whisper”? I, of course, would rather hear the new single.

    Winner:
The first single released from "Elysium", is entitled "Winner" and was given its world premiere on Monday morning, July 2nd, on The Ken Bruce Show on BBC Radio 2 in the UK between 9.30 and 12. On the next day, July 3rd, the track became available for purchase from iTunes and Amazon. On August 6th, the single will be released on CD and as two digital bundles. CD and first digital bundle contains "Winner (album version)" and three bonus tracks. 'A certain "Je ne sais quoi"' was originally written and recorded in 2007 and recently reworked by Chris and Neil. 'The way through the woods' was recorded in Los Angeles during the 'Elysium' sessions but Neil and Chris did more work on it subsequently, creating a much longer version. It is a setting of a poem by Rudyard Kipling. 'I started a joke' is a cover of a Bee Gees song from the 60s and is intended as a tribute to the late Robin Gibb. All three bonus tracks have been mixed by Bob Kraushaar. A second digital bundle contains remixes of 'Winner', including mixes by John Dahlback and Niki And The Dove. There probably will be commercial and promo 12" release containing Winner remixes. Like the rest of the album, "Winner" was produced in Los Angeles by Andrew Dawson and Pet Shop Boys. It has an orchestral arrangement by Joachim Horsley, Andrew Dawson and Ben Leathers. The video for "Winner", was directed by Surrender Monkeys and features the London Rollergirls. • Eric Watson RIP:
On March 18th, 2012 Eric Watson died of a heart attack aged 56. Watson was an important shaper of 1980s pop photography. His work for Smash Hits during a key era in British pop helped create the glossy image of the age. In particular, Watson's collaboration with Pet Shop Boys defined the notion of image-making as a vital part of the way the post-punk generation took control of its own marketing.
The return of The Most Incredible Thing:
The Most Incredible Thing, the ballet by Pet Shop Boys and choreographer Javier De Frutos, returned to Sadler's Wells in London for two weeks (25 March - 7 April). Ballet returned in a revised production with several creative changes. Another two performances were taken in St. Polten, Austria.

    Ultimate:

The Pet Shop Boys today revealed the tracklist for their upcoming 19-song best-of Ultimate Pet Shop Boys — which also will be available as a special edition with a bonus DVD of vintage BBC live performances — and announced the set will close with a newly recorded single called “Together.”

As we reported last week, the new EMI Catalogue collection — due Nov. 1 in the U.K. — features a sampling of the synthpop duo’s singles, spanning 1984’s “West End Girls” to “Love Etc.,” the first single off 2009 album Yes. By limiting Ultimate to one CD, however, the band has omitted some of its best-known tracks, including such hits as “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money)” and “Rent” (see full tracklist below).

As whoever runs the Pet Shop Boys’ Twitter feed noted last week, “It’s really aimed at the casual or impulse buyer who’d quite like one CD of the PSB’s hits. Do such people exist? EMI think so.” (PSB also announced via Twitter that it will release a 2CD score next March for its upcoming “The Most Incredible Thing” ballet.)

The new song, “Together,” was written and recorded this month with Tim Powell, a former “staff member” of the songwriting and production team Xenomania. The track also will be issued as a single, although the release date has not yet been announced.

Finally, the DVD included in the special edition will include 27 live performances culled from various BBC programs such as “Top of the Pops,” dating back to a 1985 rendition of “West End Girls” (see tracklist below as well). The DVD also will include the Pet Shop Boys’ full performance last June at the Glastonbury festival.
